SYRACUSE, N.Y. — As August comes to a close, parents are starting to prepare for back-to-school shopping for their children. To help alleviate the burden, a group of Syracuse residents who understand the challenges came together on Sunday to support their neighbors. The annual Backpack Giveaway and Cookout, organized by The LABB barbershop and Hood Rich Fashion brand, began four years ago with the assistance of sponsors and local organizations. This initiative reflects the community’s commitment to supporting one another.
David Moore, the owner of The Labb, emphasized the importance of communal care, stating, “We need to understand that we are a community and if we don’t take care of ourselves, who’s gonna take care of us?” For the founders of Hood Rich Fashion, giving back to kids facing circumstances similar to those they experienced in Syracuse is a top priority.
The care extended by these organizers was well-received by attendees, particularly in light of the current economic challenges. The distribution of school supplies not only eases the financial strain for families in Syracuse but also conveys a message of support and unity within the community.
The event sponsors like Avery Yarn and Jordan Pierre emphasized the significance of reaching out for help and showcasing positive narratives within the community. In addition to providing school supplies, the organizers also hosted a basketball tournament, all with the aim of creating a positive experience and fostering excitement for the upcoming school year among the youth.
