The Onondaga County Health Department has reported that mosquitoes from traps in the Cicero Swamp tested positive for Eastern Equine Encephalitis Virus (EEEV) and West Nile Virus (WNV). These viruses had been previously identified in the area on July 24, 2024. With ongoing warm temperatures increasing the risk of mosquito bites, residents are advised to take precautions when outdoors. The Health Department is preparing for aerial spraying of the Cicero Swamp and surrounding areas to disrupt mosquito breeding cycles and reduce the transmission of viruses to humans. The spraying is scheduled for Wednesday, August 7, after 6:30 p.m., weather permitting. Residents in the designated spray areas will be notified via the 911 emergency system. The spray area includes locations bounded by specific roads and residents are advised on precautions to take during the spraying. The pesticide Kontrol 30-30 will be used for aerial spraying, approved for this purpose by the EPA and NY State DEC. Guidelines for residents living in the spray area include staying indoors, keeping windows closed, bringing pets indoors, and other safety measures.
