Auburn man busted with drugs and firearm in Finger Lakes drug seizure operation

Auburn, N.Y. – A man from Auburn was taken into custody by authorities after the discovery of cocaine, a firearm, and more than $5,000 in cash during the execution of a search warrant. The Finger Lakes Drug Task Force (FLDTF) has been investigating Walter R. Leonard Jr. in Cayuga County for illegal possession, sale, and distribution of narcotics. Following their probe, a search warrant was obtained for Leonard Jr. and his home in Auburn on August 5. The search revealed 43.8 grams of Cocaine HCL, a loaded Taurus Spectrum .380 caliber semi-automatic handgun, and over $5,000 in US currency. Leonard Jr. faces charges including two counts of criminal possession of a controlled substance in the third degree and one count of criminal possession of a weapon in the second degree. He was taken to Cayuga County Jail, and the Cayuga County District Attorney’s Office is aiming to keep him in custody due to his past felony convictions. The FLDTF, consisting of members from the New York State Police, Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office, and Auburn Police Department, was assisted by the Auburn Police Department’s Gun Involved Violence Elimination Team. The Cayuga County District Attorney’s Office will handle the prosecution, and anyone with more information is urged to contact the FLDTF at 315-282-7540.
