The National Weather Service confirmed on Thursday that a tornado had struck Canastota, resulting in significant damage to the area. Tragically, an 82-year-old man lost his life, powerlines and trees were knocked down, and residents were forced to evacuate their homes.

Meteorologist Bryan Greenblatt from the National Weather Service in Binghamton described the aftermath as a converging path of damage, with destruction leading to a single point and going in various directions. The survey by the National Weather Service focused on Barlow Street, where severe damage was observed along with scattered debris caused by the tornado.

In response to the disaster, cleanup and restoration efforts have been ongoing in the community, particularly on Barlow Street. However, some homes may not be salvageable, posing challenges for residents, especially renters who may not have adequate insurance coverage.

Canastota Mayor Rosanne Warner expressed concerns about displaced families struggling to find alternative housing due to limited rental availability in the area. Helping affected individuals navigate insurance claims has become a critical priority in the recovery process.
