Canastota, N.Y. – The recent storm that hit Canastota caused unprecedented damage, leaving residents shocked by the severity of the destruction. Long-time resident Carol Casler described it as an event unlike any they had experienced before.

Significant damage was concentrated on Barlow Street, with homes losing roofs and trees collapsing onto properties and power lines. Tragically, 82-year-old Robert Popple lost his life during the storm.

During a press conference in Rome, Governor Kathy Hochul shared details about the incident, stating that Popple was caught outside while attempting to check on his antique car. The governor paid tribute to Popple, highlighting his sudden and tragic passing.

In the aftermath, Rich Palmer opened his home on Barlow Street to neighbors seeking refuge from the storm, accommodating around 15 to 20 people. Despite his own property escaping major damage, Palmer expressed sorrow for those who were less fortunate, particularly the Popple family.

Canastota Mayor Roseanna Warner assured residents that efforts were being made to support those affected, including working with the Canastota Housing Authority to provide temporary accommodations and assisting property owners in rehabilitating their homes.

Palmer and his family were briefly evacuated from their home but have since returned, offering shelter to others in need and emphasizing their willingness to help in any way possible.

For those looking to assist, Mayor Warner advised against donating food or clothing at this time, as plans for the relocation of displaced individuals are still being finalized.

A fund has been set up by the United Way to aid families in Rome and Canastota affected by the severe weather.
