Headline: Severe Storm Causes Extensive Damage in Canastota, New York

The recent storm in Canastota on Tuesday left significant destruction, an unprecedented event for residents according to Carol Casler, a long-time resident of 54 years. Barlow Street faced the brunt of the devastation, with homes losing roofs and trees collapsing onto properties and power lines. Tragically, the storm claimed the life of 82-year-old Robert Popple.

During a press conference held in Rome, Governor Kathy Hochul expressed condolences for the loss of Popple, who was swept away while checking on his antique car. Rich Palmer, a resident who opened his home on Barlow Street as shelter, recounted the chaos as neighbors sought safety.

Canastota Mayor Roseanna Warner assured assistance for affected residents, collaborating with the Canastota Housing Authority to aid in relocation or property rehabilitation. Despite being evacuated, Palmer and his family plan to stay in their home to offer support to others in need.

If considering donations, Mayor Warner advised against providing food or clothes, as the relocation plans for those affected are still being determined. The United Way has initiated a fund to aid families impacted by the severe weather in Rome and Canastota.
