Central New York businesses capitalize on approaching solar eclipse for increased revenue

Businesses are capitalizing on the upcoming eclipse in Central New York, just 11 days away. They view this rare cosmic event as a prime opportunity to boost sales. While protective glasses are essential for viewing the eclipse, businesses are suggesting that customers might want additional items for this unique occasion. Retailers like Wegmans and Tops Supermarkets are offering eclipse-themed merchandise, such as shirts, plates, and baked goods. Local stores like Johnson Studio & Camera are also selling solar glasses, binoculars, and telescopes dedicated to the event, with phones ringing off the hook as the eclipse draws nearer.

Beyond local businesses, online searches for Syracuse Eclipse Apparel reveal a wide array of clothing options commemorating the eclipse. Some residents, like Kevin Harrison, see the economic benefits and promotional opportunities that the eclipse brings to Central New York. However, individuals like Tony Rowe perceive this as opportunistic capitalism. Sonic Drive-In, for example, has introduced a limited-time Blackout Slush Float to mark the occasion.

Despite the enthusiasm, concerns linger, including overspending on eclipse-related supplies and uncertainty about the event’s turnout due to external factors like weather. Sun Chips is even offering exclusive eclipse-themed chips for sale online for a limited time. Customers will have just four minutes and 27 seconds to purchase this novelty item. For some, the decision comes down to choosing between a once-in-a-lifetime chip bag or witnessing the total solar eclipse.
