TOPIC: Severe Thunderstorm Watch for CNY Counties with Potential Evening Hazards
A Severe Thunderstorm Watch has been issued for several counties in Central New York (CNY), including Onondaga, Madison, Otsego, Chenango, Seneca, Wayne, Cayuga, Cortland, Yates, Broome, Tompkins, and Tioga. The watch is valid until 8:00 pm and covers the highlighted area in yellow as shown below.
Understanding the distinction between a Severe Thunderstorm Watch and Warning:
A Severe Thunderstorm Watch signifies a moderate risk (Level 2 out of 5) for severe thunderstorms, with the main threats being damaging wind gusts reaching 60mph and large hail of 1 inch in diameter. Thunderstorm activity is expected to be scattered in the afternoon and evening, with the potential for individual cells to become severe in localized areas. Multiple thunderstorm batches may affect the same regions, and heavy rainfall could trigger flash flooding.
