TOPICS: Severe thunderstorms in Central New York, high temperatures, heat index, cold front, Great Lakes, I-81 corridor

After severe thunderstorms caused widespread tree damage across central New York on Monday, we are anticipating a second round of storms today.

High temperatures are expected to reach the low 90s, coupled with high dewpoints resulting in a heat index nearing 100 before the thunderstorms reach Syracuse.

A cold front moving through the Great Lakes region will bring severe thunderstorms from west to east across the state today. These storms are forecasted to arrive earlier in the afternoon compared to yesterday, with the period between 2-5pm being the prime time for the line of storms to impact the I-81 corridor.

The main threats from these storms today include heavy rain and strong damaging winds, with a possibility of large hail or isolated tornadoes from the strongest storms. If there is a tornado warning for central New York, viewers can tune into CNYCentral’s Facebook page or television broadcast for live updates on the storm.

The severe thunderstorms are expected to move largely east of the region by sunset tonight, leading into a more quiet weather pattern to end the week.
