In Oswego, N.Y., the quick response and well-executed training by the Oswego Fire Department and the U.S. Coast Guard led to the successful rescue of a man and his dog on Wednesday night. A bystander’s 911 call reported the man and his dog in distress in the water of Oswego Harbor, prompting a swift joint operation to save them.

Members of the U.S. Coast Guard based in Oswego played a critical role in saving the man, identified as Taylor, and his dog from Lake Ontario after the man entered the water to rescue his pet. The Oswego Fire Department was the first to arrive on the scene, receiving the distress call around 7:38 p.m. Despite the challenging conditions of pitch-black darkness and cold waters, the rescue efforts were expedited.

The fire crews managed to provide the man with an article of clothing to help him stay afloat until further assistance arrived. The U.S. Coast Guard, reaching the scene on a 29-foot response boat within 30 minutes, successfully extracted the man and his dog from the water, both showing signs of hypothermia.

Following the rescue, the man and his dog were promptly transported to a hospital and an emergency animal hospital for further medical attention. Coast Guard Boat Coxswain Andrew Mantlo emphasized the importance of prompt action during water-related emergencies and advised the public to prioritize safety measures, including wearing appropriate gear and being aware of hypothermia symptoms.

Mantlo highlighted the significance of knowing how to seek help in critical situations involving water bodies, particularly in challenging environments like the Oswego River leading to Lake Ontario. He commended the individuals involved for their survival, underscoring the importance of preparedness and quick response in safeguarding lives during such emergencies.
