Democrat voters in NYC encouraged to change voting registration to second homes in upstate NY

A liberal nonprofit in Albany, New York is encouraging Democrats from New York City to change their voting addresses to their upstate vacation homes to increase their voting power. MoveIndigo, the organization facilitating this initiative, is connecting Democrats with battleground districts where they can relocate to. In letters sent out recently, voters were urged to re-register in locations with competitive congressional races. The organization expressed concerns about the post-election plans of Republicans in battleground districts, emphasizing key issues such as women’s rights, LGBTQ rights, and democracy being threatened by MAGA Republicans.

According to MoveIndigo, the outcome of the election could hinge on a few crucial districts, potentially affecting the American people significantly. They highlighted a race in Upstate New York in 2022 where a Republican defeated a Democratic incumbent by a narrow margin, indicating the competitiveness of such districts. The organization emphasized that voting from a second home is a way of supporting the community and ensuring adequate representation at various levels of government.

While MoveIndigo stressed that New York State laws allow voters with dual residences to choose where to register, some federal government resources, such as the Federal Assistance Voting Program website, specify that a voting address should be where one’s permanent home is located.
