East Seneca Turnpike to be closed this weekend for bridge construction

East Seneca Turnpike in Syracuse, known as State Route 173, will be shut down to traffic between South Salina Street and East Brighton Avenue starting at 7 p.m. on Friday, August 23, until 6 a.m. on Monday, August 26. This closure is essential for the installation of steel on the I-81 southbound bridge over East Seneca Turnpike as part of the I-81 Viaduct Project. The New York State Department of Transportation advises motorists on East Seneca Turnpike heading east to follow the designated detour leading traffic north on South Salina Street and then east on East Brighton Avenue. For westbound travelers on East Seneca Turnpike, the detour routes traffic north on East Brighton Avenue to the Interstate 81 northbound on-ramp, then Exit 17 (South Salina Street/Brighton Avenue), followed by a westward turn on Calthrop Avenue and south on South Salina Street. Drivers should anticipate delays and plan extra time for their journeys. Construction progress is contingent on weather conditions and may be altered as needed. Motorists are urged to drive cautiously in construction zones, as fines for speeding are doubled in these areas, and multiple speeding violations could lead to driver license suspension.
