Explanation of substantial fines for recurring bridge collisions on Onondaga Lake Parkway

A common scenario occurred yet again when a truck became stuck under a parkway bridge last Wednesday afternoon. Although the driver was unharmed, they received 25 tickets for disregarding multiple traffic signs warning of the low-clearance bridge ahead. This incident resulted in traffic disruptions and diverted law enforcement resources. Nick Paro, the Town of Salina Supervisor, expressed that this recurring issue has been acknowledged by the judges, with offenders facing fines for their actions. He noted that typically, a fine of a few hundred dollars is imposed for each missed sign, potentially resulting in a substantial total penalty for the driver. Moreover, the revenue from these fines largely goes to the state court system, with a portion allocated to the local municipality where the incident occurred. Paro emphasized that the primary goal is to promote road safety and deter such incidents, rather than generate revenue. He underscored the importance of drivers staying vigilant while on the road. Paro mentioned that the drop in bridge strikes may be attributed in part to the Village of Liverpool’s enforcement of a ban on big rig trucks, leading to a significant reduction in truck traffic passing through the village.
