Gerry McNamara, a Syracuse icon, named as new head coach for Siena men’s basketball team

Gerry McNamara is the newly appointed head coach of the men’s basketball team at Siena College. The former Syracuse University standout will take on the role as the 19th head coach of the Saints after a 15-year tenure at Syracuse, where he most recently served as associate head coach under Adrian Autry.
Excited about his new position, McNamara expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “I am so honored and excited to lead Siena College as the new head men’s basketball coach. My family and I can’t wait to get started and embrace Siena and the Capital Region.” McNamara’s appointment follows the dismissal of previous head coach Carmen Maciariello, who had a 68-72 record over five seasons, culminating in a 4-28 season.
Known for his remarkable playing career at Syracuse, McNamara brings a wealth of experience to his new role. He was a key figure in Syracuse’s 2003 National Championship and played a significant role in the team’s NCAA Tournament successes over the years. McNamara also has a strong background in recruiting and player development, having mentored NBA talents like Buddy Boeheim and Cole Swider.
With Siena facing a challenging season, McNamara’s strong recruiting abilities will be vital in turning the team’s fortunes around. The college currently ranks among the lowest in Division I teams this season based on performance. McNamara’s impressive collegiate career, which includes numerous records and achievements at Syracuse, positions him well to lead Siena to success.
In response to McNamara’s appointment, Siena College President Dr. Charles “Chuck” Seifert expressed confidence in the new head coach’s ability to uphold the college’s basketball legacy. McNamara’s official introduction will take place during a press conference on Tuesday, April 2 at 1 p.m., which will be streamed live on Siena All-Access.
