Governor Kathy Hochul of New York has officially signed a budget extender, resulting in a delay for the state budget for the current year. The fiscal year traditionally starts on April 1st, but the deadline has now been pushed to April 4th. Governor Hochul stated that she believes a final budget agreement is within reach, but she understands the desire of New Yorkers to spend the holiday weekend with their families. Throughout the budget negotiations, issues such as housing, retail theft penalties, and tenant protections have been points of contention. Surprisingly, one topic that seems to have been sidelined in discussions is the regulation of addictive social media content for children. Although Governor Hochul had emphasized this as a priority during her state of the state address, Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins indicated that this is not currently a focus. She expressed that addressing this challenge requires collective effort and that it cannot be resolved by the state alone. The proposed Safe for Kids Act aims to prohibit addictive social media content and empower the attorney general to pursue legal actions for damages.
