In Syracuse, New York, a rare astrological event is approaching in just six days, with some of the best viewing spots in Central New York. However, it is important to be cautious before looking up at the sky, as eye doctors nationwide are warning about the potential permanent eye damage that could result from viewing the total solar eclipse.

Dr. Viola Kanevsky emphasizes the risks of staring at the eclipse without proper eclipse glasses, as it can lead to long-term damage such as solar retinopathy or retinal damage, which may result in permanent vision loss. Dr. Kanevsky from Acuity NYC explains that the photodamage to the layers of the retina caused by the eclipse can lead to swelling, burning, and release of harmful free radicals, resulting in ongoing damage beyond the initial exposure.

It may not be immediately apparent, but the impact of the damage could become evident within a few days or weeks. Dr. Kanevsky stresses that there is no safe duration for looking at the eclipse without appropriate glasses, and regular sunglasses do not provide sufficient protection for the eyes.

To ensure the safety of your eyes during the upcoming solar eclipse, it is recommended to verify the authenticity of your eclipse glasses. For more guidance and resources on viewing the eclipse safely, you can visit the American Optometric Association website.
