SYRACUSE, N.Y.—Drivers are being informed by the New York State Department of Transportation that a section of Interstate 481 southbound will be closed overnight starting on Monday, August 26. The closure, which spans from Exit 1 (Brighton Avenue) to the merge of I-481 southbound with Interstate 81 northbound, will be in effect from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. from Monday through Wednesday, August 28. This closure is necessary to facilitate the installation of bridge steel as part of the I-81 Viaduct Project.

During this period, the East Brighton Avenue northbound on-ramp to I-81 northbound will also be closed. Detour routes have been established as follows:

– Drivers traveling from I-481 southbound to I-81 northbound are advised to take the designated detour, which directs traffic to Exit 1 (Brighton Ave), proceed north on East Brighton Avenue, then head south on South State Street before joining I-81 southbound.
– Those heading from I-481 southbound to I-81 southbound should use the signed detour through Exit 1 (Brighton Ave), north on East Brighton Avenue, south on South State Street, east on East Calthrop Avenue, and then to I-81 northbound.
– Motorists using East Brighton Avenue northbound and southbound to access the I-81 northbound on-ramp are directed to follow the detour route guiding them north on East Brighton Avenue, south on South State Street, east on East Calthrop Avenue, and onto I-81 northbound.

Please note that construction activities are contingent upon weather conditions and may be subject to change. Drivers are strongly encouraged to abide by reduced speeds and exercise caution in work zones, as fines for speeding in these areas are doubled. Additionally, accumulating two or more speeding violations in a work zone could lead to the suspension of an individual’s driver’s license.
