CICERO, N.Y. — Interstate 81 will undergo lane reductions starting on Monday, April 15, at 9 a.m., with both northbound and southbound traffic being condensed into two lanes from just south of the I-81/I-481 interchange to the South Bay Road bridge in the Town of Cicero. Additionally, the following ramps at the northern interchange of I-81/I-481 in Cicero will be closed to traffic: Exit 9S (I-81 southbound) entrance ramp from I-481 northbound to I-81 southbound. Drivers can use a signed detour to Exit 10 (Route 11 Circle Drive North Syracuse), and follow East Circle Drive eastbound, then Frontage Road southbound, South Bay Road southbound, Bear Road westbound, State Route 481 southbound, and finally I-81 southbound. Exit 9N (I-81 northbound) entrance ramp from I-481 southbound to I-81 northbound. Motorists can take a detour to Exit 8 (Northern Boulevard), travel east on Northern Boulevard, head to I-481 northbound, and then reach Exit 9N (I-81 northbound).
These lane reductions, crossover arrangement, and ramp closures are needed for a culvert replacement as part of the ongoing I-81 Viaduct Project, and are anticipated to continue until late October, weather permitting. Drivers are reminded to exercise caution when passing through the construction zone and observe all traffic control measures, such as signs and flaggers. It is important to note that fines for speeding in work zones are doubled. For the latest updates, individuals can call 511 or visit www.511ny.org.
