A Syracuse resident was arrested on Tuesday after being captured on video setting a trash can on fire outside the Sarah Loguen Center of Upstate University Hospital, court documents revealed. The center is specifically designed to cater to student-parents and staff of Upstate. According to the felony complaint, Edward J. Champion, 36, was seen igniting the fire near the center’s entrance around 4:11 a.m., while four Upstate employees were present inside, resulting in significant damage to the building’s windows. The Syracuse Fire Department extinguished the fire upon arrival at the scene. Shortly after, Champion was apprehended on the 400 block of South Salina Street, wearing the same attire as the individual in the surveillance footage. He was then taken into custody by the NYS University Police at Upstate and charged with second-degree arson, second-degree criminal mischief, second-degree reckless endangerment, and third-degree criminal trespass. Champion is currently being held at the Onondaga County Justice Center.
