Man in Rome arrested following report from Microsoft regarding upload of child sexual exploitation material

SCOPE: Arrest for child exploitation in Rome Material Cannistra Police Investigation Oneida County ROME, N.Y. — An individual in Rome was apprehended following the discovery of concerning material related to child exploitation in their possession. Manlius resident sentenced to 10 years in incarceration for possession of numerous child sexual abuse images. The Oneida County Sheriff’s Office informs that Joseph M. Cannistra, aged 44, faces charges for promoting a sexual performance by a minor, a Class D felony. The case was initiated after Microsoft alerted the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children about illicit material on Cannistra’s device. Subsequently, the matter was referred to the New York State Police, who collaborated with the Oneida County Child Advocacy Center to secure a search warrant based on substantial evidence. On July 23, law enforcement officers conducted a search at Cannistra’s residence in Rome. Cannistra is currently held at Oneida County Jail on a $10,000 cash bond. The case remains under examination by the Oneida County District Attorney’s Office, with the potential for additional charges to be filed.
