ALBANY, N.Y. (WRGB) – According to the latest survey from the Siena College Research Institute, Vice President Kamala Harris is leading over former President Donald Trump in New York, based on the opinions of those surveyed. This is the first poll from Siena to include Harris in the survey, where she is favored by 53% of New York state voters compared to Trump’s 39%. A previous poll in late June showed Trump trailing President Joe Biden by a closer margin of 47-39%.
Harris currently holds a 53-43% favorability rating, improving from 42-47% in October 2023. Meanwhile, Trump’s favorability rating remains relatively steady at 39-59%, similar to 37-59% in June, among registered New York voters.
Siena College pollster Steven Greenberg commented on the shifts seen in the survey results, noting the impact of Harris entering the race. He highlighted that Harris now enjoys support from 86% of Democrats, up from the 75% Biden had in June. Additionally, independent voters now favor Trump over Harris 47-40%, compared to 45-28% over Biden previously. Harris also has significant support from Black voters, leading Trump 81-11%, which is a substantial increase from Biden’s 59-29% lead in June.
In a six-way election scenario, Harris leads Trump with 49-37%, with Robert F. Kennedy Jr. at 7% and the three minor party candidates at 4%, according to the poll findings. A large majority of voters, by a margin of 74-23%, consider this election to be the most important in their lifetime.
Regarding other races in New York, Democratic U.S. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand leads her Republican challenger Mike Sapraicone 56-33%. Voters also strongly endorse the Equal Rights Amendment on November’s ballot, with a 68-23% margin of support.
The survey reveals a widening gender gap with Harris replacing Biden, where Harris leads among women by 34 points at 64-30%, compared to Biden’s 51-33% lead. However, the lead with men appears more marginal, with Trump currently favored 49-43% over Harris, contrasting with the 46-42% lead Trump had in June.
The survey also notes shifts in age groups, with Harris gaining more support from voters aged 35-54, where she leads 54-40%. Governor Kathy Hochul’s favorability rating stands at 39-50%, an improvement from 38-49% in June based on the poll results.
The Siena College Research Poll was conducted between July 28 and August 1, 2024, and included 1,199 likely voters in New York, using both cell phones and landlines.
