New York allocates $40 million for youth employment program to address gun violence

The next phase of the Youth Employment Program in New York State’s Gun Involved Violence Elimination (GIVE) Initiative has received funding of nearly $40 million. This program, lauded by Gov. Kathy Hochul for its effectiveness in providing opportunities for youth and reducing gun violence, saw approximately 2,650 young participants in the most recent phase from January to June. Notably, there was a 68% decrease in shootings with injury incidents compared to the previous year, and a 29% decline in such incidents through July 24.

Under the GIVE Initiative, 28 police departments across 21 counties reported on the positive impact, with Central New York and Finger Lakes set to receive significant funding from the state for this initiative. These funds will facilitate paid work and training opportunities for at-risk youth in these regions until June 2025.

Governor Hochul emphasized the importance of public safety and supporting vulnerable youth, stating that the Youth Employment Program aligns with her administration’s commitment to addressing gun violence and providing valuable skills to at-risk youth. Additionally, the program’s expansion is expected to continue making positive strides in reducing violence, as witnessed in the decline of shootings in Syracuse in 2023.

The upcoming phase of the Youth Employment Program will run from September to June, targeting youth aged 14 to 20 from low-income households. Eligibility criteria include a household income below 200% of the federal poverty level. For instance, this threshold amounts to $51,640 for a family of three.
