In a scathing critique on Thursday, Representative Nicole Malliotakis, a Republican from New York, criticized New York City leaders for their ongoing refusal to collaborate with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials in removing illegal immigrants from the city. In 2023, ICE issued 109 immigration detainers to the New York Police Department (NYPD) requesting the detainment of incarcerated individuals for 48 hours beyond their release date to allow ICE agents time to decide whether to take them into federal custody. However, the NYPD did not comply with these detainers due to laws enacted in 2014 under Mayor Bill de Blasio’s administration, which restrict the city’s cooperation with ICE.

Rep. Malliotakis expressed her frustration stating that the city’s failure to cooperate with ICE has resulted in dangerous criminals being allowed to freely roam the streets while ignoring the efforts of ICE officials. She emphasized the detrimental impact of releasing criminals residing in the country illegally and criticized progressive politicians for impeding law enforcement efforts. Malliotakis called for the City Council and Mayor to resume cooperation with federal immigration authorities to effectively address criminals causing havoc in the city.

The congresswoman stressed the importance of public safety in a post-9/11 world and denounced Democratic policies at the city, state, and federal levels, which she believes have led to negative consequences endangering American citizens. Malliotakis has consistently advocated for ICE’s role in maintaining city safety, previously urging the repeal of the “de Blasio” laws that limit the city’s collaboration with ICE. Additionally, she is a co-sponsor of the POLICE Act, a federal legislation aimed at classifying assaulting a first responder as a deportable offense.
