One person killed, five ejected from Amish buggy in crash with SUV

INTRO: A crash between an Amish buggy and an SUV occurred on State Route 12 in Lowville, New York. The incident involving the 2020 black Ford Escape driven by Jared J. Spaulding led to a fatality and several injuries.

DETAILS: On Sunday, July 14, the New York State Police responded to a collision on State Route 12 near Yancey Road involving a motor vehicle and an Amish buggy. According to initial findings, the Ford Escape driven by 40-year-old Jared J. Spaulding from Copenhagen, NY, rear-ended the Amish buggy while both vehicles were traveling north on State Route 12 in Lowville. Spaulding fled the scene and headed north after the crash.

CONSEQUENCES: The impact caused all five occupants of the Amish buggy to be ejected. Tragically, a 17-year-old Amish male was pronounced dead at the scene. The injured occupants, including a 21-year-old male, 20-year-old female, 18-year-old female, and 16-year-old male, were treated for their injuries. Names of the injured individuals have not been disclosed as families are being notified. Two males sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries and were taken to Lewis County Hospital, while the females sustained minor injuries.

FOLLOW-UP: Jared J. Spaulding, the SUV driver, was later located at his home. Charges are pending as the investigation into the incident continues.
