In Syracuse, New York, on March 7th, Ashton DeGonzaque, an 11-year-old boy, was discovered unconscious and not breathing in his apartment, and was later pronounced dead. According to his family, doctors informed them that the boy had traces of fentanyl and cocaine in his system.

The investigation into the caseworker from Onondaga County CPS, who was responsible for ensuring Ashton’s safety, is nearing completion, as stated by Onondaga County Executive Ryan McMahon. Retired judges Martha Mulroy and Martha Walsh Hood are yet to provide him with a report on the review. Once received, they will assess the memo, review the recommendations from the judges, and determine the subsequent actions.

The county confirmed that the caseworker and their supervisor chose to resign on Wednesday instead of facing termination. McMahon expressed his deep regret over Ashton’s tragic death, emphasizing the need for improved communication between county and city agencies to prevent similar incidents in the future.

McMahon stressed the importance of agencies working together seamlessly to avoid further tragedies and stated that revelations from various involved agencies are continuing to surface. Once the judge’s review is received, decisions will be made promptly and shared with the public.
