Over 37,000 tickets issued during 4th of July holiday traffic safety enforcement efforts

ALBANY, N.Y. — Governor Kathy Hochul’s office has announced that state and local law enforcement issued over 37,000 tickets from July 3 to July 7.

“Keeping New Yorkers safe has been my top priority since taking office and this includes keeping reckless and aggressive drivers off the roads,” Governor Hochul stated. “During a time when friends and families gather together, we will continue to work closely with law enforcement and ensure New Yorkers can celebrate safely.”

State and local law enforcement collectively issued 37,899 tickets, with 1,227 individuals charged with driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

In comparison to last year, law enforcement handed out 35,104 tickets across the state during the July 4th enforcement period.

This year, the State Police arrested 251 individuals on DUI charges and issued a total of 12,700 tickets for various violations. The breakdown includes 4,248 for speeding, 1,315 for not wearing seat belts, 360 for distracted driving, and 219 for not obeying the Move Over Law.

Other law enforcement agencies also participated in the campaign, issuing a total of 24,729 tickets for infractions including impaired driving and speeding.

Below is a breakdown of the tickets issued by other agencies during the enforcement drive:
– Alcohol/Drugs: 1,227

– Move Over Law: 441
– Seat Belt: 2,905
– Speeding: 9,316
– Other Violations: 22,757
Total: 37,899
