The Onondaga County Health Department in N.Y. has confirmed the presence of two rare mosquito-borne diseases in the county, namely Jamestown Canyon Virus (JCV) and Flanders Virus (FLAV). While JCV can be transmitted to humans through infected mosquitoes and may result in symptoms such as fever, headache, fatigue, cough, and sore throat, FLAV has not been known to cause disease in humans but may indicate potential West Nile Virus (WNV) transmission. To mitigate the risk of infection, individuals are advised to take precautions against mosquito bites during outdoor activities, such as wearing protective clothing, using EPA-approved insect repellents, and mosquito-proofing their homes. The Health Department conducts weekly mosquito pool testing and maintains a Mosquito Control program to manage mosquito breeding habitats. Additionally, the CDC highlights the symptoms and implications of JCV infection, emphasizing the need for medical attention if flu-like symptoms follow a mosquito bite.
