Nearly a year has passed since the tragic shooting death of 20-year-old Kaylin Gillis, at the hands of Kevin Monahan, who has been convicted of murder and faces a significant prison sentence. In the aftermath, legal actions are mounting up. The most recent lawsuit, filed in late March, is seeking to hold Monahan’s home insurance accountable for compensating damages.
The incident occurred when Kaylin’s boyfriend, Blake Walsh, was driving his mother’s vehicle and unintentionally entered the driveway of Monahan’s residence in Hebron, NY on April 15, 2023. Monahan, reacting by firing his shotgun, tragically ended Kaylin’s life with a single shot.
Walsh has filed a lawsuit against both Kevin and Jinx Monahan, citing emotional distress resulting from the tragic events. The claim highlights the responsibility of Jinx Monahan, alleging she was aware of her husband’s tendency to overreact to vehicles entering their property and his accessibility to firearms.
In the latest legal action against Preferred Mutual Insurance Company, Walsh argues that the couple’s insurance policy should cover damages resulting from Jinx Monahan’s alleged negligence. This lawsuit references a previous case initiated by the insurance company, claiming that the Monahans’ policy does not extend coverage to criminal acts. Notably, Jinx Monahan has not faced any criminal charges or convictions.
Preferred Mutual’s counter-suit is in response to a wrongful death lawsuit filed by Kaylin’s father, Andrew Gillis, seeking a minimum of $5 million in damages. The insurance company is contesting the obligation to pay out any compensation in that specific claim.
Despite his murder conviction, Kevin Monahan is anticipated to appeal the court’s decision, with legal battles ensuing between the involved parties.
