Significant traffic alert for I-81 near airport exit beginning Monday

The NYS Department of Transportation has issued a traffic alert regarding the closure of Exit 27 (Syracuse Airport) on Interstate-81 Southbound, beginning on Monday, August 26. Drivers heading towards the airport will need to take a detour to reach their destination. The advised detour route is to Exit 26 (Mattydale), proceed south on State Route 11, then north on Route 11, before merging onto Interstate 81 northbound towards Exit 27 (Syracuse Airport) and Airport Boulevard. As of Monday, eastbound traffic on Airport Boulevard will be redirected to westbound lanes between South Bay Road and the Airport Boulevard on-ramp to I-81 northbound in the Town of Salina. The westbound on-ramp to I-81 southbound from Airport Boulevard will remain open, with these changes and closures expected to be in place until the end of November. Construction activities are subject to weather conditions and may be adjusted accordingly. Drivers are urged to exercise caution when driving through the work zone and adhere to all traffic control measures, including signs and directions from flaggers. It is also essential to note that speeding fines in work zones are doubled, with repeated violations potentially leading to the suspension of the driver’s license, as per the Work Zone Safety Act of 2005.
