SYRACUSE, N.Y. — This Sunday marks the final day for Central New Yorkers to utilize Southwest Airlines for flights out of Syracuse. The decision was made following Southwest’s reported loss of at least $231 million in the first quarter of 2024. The airline anticipates reducing its workforce by 2,000 employees and receiving fewer aircraft deliveries by the end of the year. Southwest’s CEO has emphasized the need to address financial challenges promptly to regain profitability.

While Syracuse is not the lone airport affected by Southwest’s flight reductions, Rochester Airport has confirmed it will continue to offer Southwest services. Rochester Airport Director, Andrew Moore, expressed readiness to accommodate Central New York travelers redirected from Syracuse when the service ceases in August. The Syracuse Regional Airport Authority stated its ongoing communication with Southwest Airlines to determine a future reinstatement of service in Syracuse.
