POTSDAM, N.Y. (TND) — A councilor in Potsdam, New York is facing backlash for a comment she made regarding the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump. Christine Paige, who joined the Potsdam Town Council in 2023, stated on Facebook that she viewed the attempt as akin to putting down a rabid dog. Potsdam Town Supervisor Marty Miller issued a statement condemning her remark, stating that the Board does not support her statement and denounces her comments.
Miller expressed that while Paige claims her comment was an act of freedom of speech, the consequences have been detrimental to the integrity of the Board and the community of Potsdam. He mentioned the burden placed on the Board and Town Hall staff due to the backlash, noting that the Board does not have the authority to remove an elected official like Paige from her position.
According to NNY 360, Paige has stated that she has no intentions of resigning and does not apologize for her remarks, citing the First Amendment as protection for her right to free speech, regardless of whether others agree with it. Paige emphasized that she has experienced similar situations in the North Country before and believes the issue will eventually subside.
Despite attempts to reach out to Paige for comment, there has been no response at the time of this report. The National Desk will update the story if a response is received.
