SYRACUSE, N.Y. — Sleep experts in Central New York are addressing the ongoing issue of a widespread sleep deficiency. More than 130 million Americans reportedly struggle with sleep problems, but there are strategies individuals can employ to enhance their sleep quality and overall health. Referred to as catching some ‘z’s, hitting the hay, or getting shuteye, sleep plays a critical role in our daily lives.
Dr. Ioana Amzuta, a Sleep Physician and Associate Professor at Upstate University Hospital, emphasized the importance of waking up feeling refreshed and energized as a sign of a good night’s sleep. Sleep Center Clinical Coordinator Robert Newman from St. Joseph’s Sleep Center highlighted that sleep is essential for overall health, serving as a restorative function vital for brain function, metabolism, cardiac health, insulin regulation, and healing processes.
Experts noted that deep sleep and REM sleep stages are crucial for memory consolidation, emotional regulation, and other physiological processes. However, an estimated 40 million Americans experience chronic sleep disorders, with many individuals unknowingly suffering from conditions like sleep apnea. Newman emphasized that sleep apnea often goes undiagnosed, with obesity being a contributing factor.
Diagnosis of sleep disorders may involve sleep studies to monitor interruptions during sleep cycles and oxygen levels. Treatment options for conditions like sleep apnea may include CPAP machines or surgical interventions, tailored to each individual’s needs. While napping can offer temporary relief, experts recommend limiting them to no more than 20 minutes to avoid disrupting nightly sleep patterns and adenosine levels crucial for falling asleep at night.
Maintaining proper sleep hygiene is essential for overall well-being. Simple lifestyle adjustments like creating a conducive sleep environment, avoiding caffeinated beverages and alcohol close to bedtime, reducing screen time exposure, and seeking medical advice for persistent sleep issues can significantly improve sleep quality. It’s crucial not to overlook the significance of adequate sleep and to address sleep-related concerns promptly for better health outcomes.
