NEWS UPDATE: West Nile Virus Detected in Mosquitoes in West Monroe, Oswego County
The Oswego County Health Department has confirmed the presence of the West Nile Virus in a mosquito sample obtained from the Town of West Monroe. In light of this discovery, a non-profit ambulance service in Oswego County ceases operation due to financial concerns.
To protect against mosquito bites and potential virus transmission, health officials recommend individuals to limit outdoor activities between dusk and dawn. It is advised to wear protective clothing while outdoors, repair or replace window and door screens, maintain clean swimming pools, discard old tires, pails, and flowerpots, and eliminate stagnant water on properties.
Those using insect repellents are encouraged to look for products containing DEET, picaridin, or oil of lemon eucalyptus for their high effectiveness. Products with permethrin should not be directly applied to the skin.
Free mosquito dunk kits are available for homeowners at the Oswego County Health Department locations on Bunner Street in Oswego or Route 3 in Fulton to help reduce mosquito populations. For additional information, visit the provided link.
